Behind the Door #12

Hope this finds you well. Hope you’re enjoying the fall.

The ambient noise is at a frenzy lately. Consider this your friendly reminder that there’s always the option to turn it off.

Stuff I like lately:

Tony Tulathimutte’s story collection REJECTION. Reddit is calling it the first incel novel, which sounds about right. It’s insightful and clever and upped my zoomer vocabulary.

FLESH, by David Szalay, about the life of an Hungarian man, Copperfield-esque, but much shorter, and, you guessed it, darker.

Right now I’m reading Buckeye, by Patrick Ryan, about a man born with a limp, coming of age during WWII, and his wife, a psychic. It’s a delight.

My kids got me hooked on “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.” It’s utterly irreverent.

I saw “One Battle After Another,” and for the chase scene alone, it’s worth it. The craftsmanship on this film is next level.

A movie I loved that didn’t get much attention last year was “Strange Darlings.” If you’re squeamish, it’s not for you. But it’s got something interesting things to say about gender politics. I didn’t agree with it, but the argument was so good I had to admire it.

Collin Hinkley and Josh Stretton-Carlson run a podcast at Village Well Books. We had a good discussion. Here’s the You-Tube Link.

In other news, I finished a novel! TRAD WIFE is coming out in May in the UK and Germany, in the fall in the US. I wrote it in eight months, which is a record for me, and I loved the experience. I think it’s the best book I’ve ever written (excepting The Keeper, which exists in its own category). So stay tuned. I have not felt so sure of something in a very long time.

Tour stuff: Today I’ll be on Instagram Live today, 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm Come watch the reissue launch for the seminal and classic BOOKS OF BLOOD by checking into Grady’s Instagram ( @gradyhendrix ) with Haley Piper, Paul Tremblay, Mick Garris, John Langan (no relation!), Conner Habib, Grady, and me!

October 11, 2025, 6:00 pm – 10:00 pm, I’ll be part of the Telluride Horror Show with Stephen Graham Jones, Daniel Krauss, Jeremy Robert Johnson, Paul Tremblay, and Grady Hendrix. Come to Telluride. Also, how awesome is this?

I’ll be in conversation with Alma Katsu for her excellent novel FIEND on October 15, 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm at Diesel Books in Santa Monica, CA.

I’ll be in Kansas City speaking at the Johnson County Community College and signing books in the area, including at Rainy Day Books in Fairway, Kansas on October 22, 4pm. Stop by or pre-order something personalized.

I read an article in the Wall Street Journal announcing LA’s demise. This was premature. We’re in a lull because streamers made a lot of crap content. It’ll come back.

Until next time, don’t get none on you.
